Poor sleep habits can spell havoc on your career

More and more researches conducted in the field of sleep health are indicating that the new generation is not taking its share of shut-eye. And to achieve the short-term gains, it’s willingly cutting down on its sleep time.

Lack of sleep, even it continues for a couple of days, may give birth to health problems including weight gain, depression, diabetes, memory loss, brain function impairment and stress, says Dr. Himanshu Garg, Sleep Specialist and Director, Aviss Health.

According to a recent research conducted by a University of Rochester, when we sleep, our brains remove toxic proteins from their neurons that are by-products of neural activity when we’re awake. But, the toxic proteins can be removed effectively only when we’re asleep. The toxic proteins are likely to remain in the brain cells, and impair our ability to think, if we continue to sacrifice our sleep time. Imagine how well you’ll be able to perform when you cannot focus and think clearly.

In a typical scenario, one should sleep for 7 to 9 hours. The numbers are different for toddlers, though.

Finding getting to sleep difficult Here’re some sure-shot ways for a good night sleep.

  1. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day
  2. Reduce your smoking, drinking, and fast food intake
  3. Slow down as your sleep time arrives
  4. Listen to good, old movie songs
  5. Or, read a book
  6. Or, just lie down and close your eyes and take some deep breaths
  7. If sleep still eludes you and this continues for a good number of days, see a sleep specialist. You might have developed a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome.

How does sleep helps improve your performance at work?
